Industrial Research and Innovation Fund
The Industrial Research and Innovation Fund (IRIF) focuses on building research and development capacity in Newfoundland and Labrador’s post-secondary institutions and other not-for-profit research facilities. IRIF is designed to develop, attract and retain highly qualified researchers and to act as a catalyst in promoting collaborativeR&D among academia and industry.
Priority areas for funding include: energy, ocean technology, health and life sciences, marine science, advanced manufacturing, ICT, aerospace and defense, and value-added natural resource industries (aquaculture, mineral processing and others).
Objectives of IRIF:
- leverageR&D investments from regional, national and international funding sources
- support R&D investments in “clusters of industrial excellence” that offer significant long-term economic development potential
- strengthen research excellence in the province’s higher education and research facilities
- attract and retain highly qualified researchers in priority areas
- promote collaborativeR&D among academia and industry at the local, national and international level
